Inferences vs. Facts

It is important for you to differentiate between facts and inferences, and this inference activity will help you to do just that.
After reading a story (pick Where The Red Fern Grows), make a two-column chart on the board with the headings “Fact” and “Inference.” Then write various facts or inferences into the appropriate column.

The difference between the facts and the inferences: you can point to a fact in the text, whereas with an inference, you can point to something in the text that seems to hint at the inference. Make sure that you are able to point at the sentence in the text that helps you make that inference.
